Specifications iPhone 5/5S/5C Teardown (UPDATED with CHIP Images) - Indonesian - India - United States

Specifications iPhone 5/5S/5C Teardown (UPDATED with CHIP Images) - Indonesian - India - United States

The iExperts Team have got our hands Apple's Latest and greatest 5S and 5C!
Watch as we open them up and give them the Teardown treatment.
iPhone 5 (left), 5S (centre) and 5C (right) Side by side.

Using the usual Pentalobe screwdriver

Using the usual Pentalobe screwdriver, we remove the bottom screws and using a suction cup, lift off the bottom left corner of the screen then work our way around the sides to release all the clips holding the screen down.

We encounter a surprise with the 5S

We encounter a surprise with the 5S. There's an extra cable connecting the Touch ID sensor to the charging port assembly. There's a little metal clip that needs to be removed before the connector can be pried loose.

After that hiccup, we have all three iPhone 5 models open.

iPhone 5 with display assembly removed.

iPhone 5S with display assembly removed.

iPhone 5C with display assembly removed.
Internal layout
So far, everything is pretty straightforward. It doesn't seem that Apple have drastically changed the internal layout.

The batteries:
  • iPhone 5 - 5.45Whr
  • iPhone 5S - 5.92Whr
  • iPhone 5C - 5.73Whr

It's interesting to note that "Apple Japan" is printed on the iPhone 5S and 5C Batteries.
This has never been seen on previous generations batteries.

The three chassis's with batteries removed.
The battery adhesives on the 5S and 5C are designed so that the batteries pull down to remove rather than across like previous generations. We used a bit of heat on the back side of the panel to warm the adhesive.
They lack the pull tab.

The Logic boards side by side.
The 5S (centre) and 5C (right) are more compact than the 5 (left), and are very similar in design.

The cameras 5, 5S, 5C (in order)

The panels with board and battery removed.
We took out the switches flex from the 5S to take a closer look.

Apple have finally addressed the switch failure issue that affects iPhone 4, iPod Touch, iPod Nano 6 and iPhone 5 power switches and changed the design with the 5S and 5C.
The switches have an extra coating that should help hold them together to prevent the failures prevalent in the other models.

The magical Touch ID sensor. Incredible functionality for such little circuitry.

The new Charger! It's incredibly compact. It's amazing how Apple have engineered it in such a small package.

That's it for now. We'll work on bringing the secrets hidden in the chips on the board soon!

After a huge effort to get the shielding off (without damaging the board),
we present to you photos of the naked rear side of the board. (Front side to follow shortly)

We've just focused on the 5S board components for now.
Analysis to follow later.

And, the front side of the board!
